oddlylOud A routine night on Lima’s Vía Expresa suddenly turned into a terrifying shootout.

On May 21, 2025, police officers pursuing a suspected criminal group confronted three men traveling in a reported stolen vehicle near Avenida Canadá.

More than 50 shots were fired as the suspects exchanged gunfire with police, leaving three officers and three suspects wounded.

Two of the suspects later died from their injuries, while the third remained hospitalized under police custody.

Police Colonel Juan Carlos Montúfar was also shot in the leg but survived.

The gunfire erupted in the middle of traffic, leaving drivers trapped as bullets flew around the Vía Expresa. Video from the scene captured people taking cover inside their vehicles as the police operation unfolded.
