The State Department on Sunday\u00a0issued a warning\u00a0to U.S. citizens in certain parts of Mexico to shelter in place until further notice on account of \u201congoing security\u00a0operations and\u00a0related\u00a0road blockages and criminal activity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The regions listed in the advisory include the Mexican states of Jalisco, Tamaulipas, Michoac\u00e1n, Guerrero and Nuevo Leon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The warning came after the Mexican army killed the powerful leader of the\u00a0Jalisco New Generation Cartel, Nemesio Rub\u00e9n Oseguera Cervantes,\u00a0or \u201cEl Mencho,\u201d on Sunday, Mexico\u2019s Ministry of Defense\u00a0said in a statement\u00a0on the social platform X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Violent clashes erupted in parts of western Mexico after the drug lord\u2019s death, with burning vehicles blocking roads in Jalisco and other states. The Security Cabinet of the Government of Mexico reported 21 active highway blockades as of midday Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Roadblocks are commonly used by cartels to disrupt military operations, according to\u00a0The Associated Press.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Videos on social media showed plumes of smoke billowing over Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, and people sprinting in panic through Guadalajara International Airport. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Several airlines have issued travel advisories or halted flights. Jalisco canceled school for Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Trump\u00a0in recent months\u00a0has said that he was\u00a0willing to launch strikes\u00a0inside Mexico if necessary to thwart the smuggling of illegal narcotics into the U.S.\u00a0His comments came after the U.S. military began\u00a0taking out alleged drug-trafficking boats\u00a0in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
