Its surrounding waters are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/business\/economy\/suez-canal-blockage-delaying-estimated-400-million-hour-goods-n1262136\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">vital trade waterways<\/a>\u00a0between Asia and Europe and the Middle East and among the busiest\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/world\/inside-ever-given-s-suez-canal-rescue-how-tides-tugboats-n1262906\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">global sea lanes<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"350\" src=\"https:\/\/www.landingliker.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/IMG_8037.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1362\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.landingliker.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/IMG_8037.webp 700w, https:\/\/www.landingliker.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/IMG_8037-300x150.webp 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Singapore-flagged tanker Hafnia Nile and the Sao Tome and Principe-flagged tanker Ceres I were about 55 km (34 miles) northeast of the Singaporean island of Pedra Branca on the eastern approach to the Singapore Straits, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 22 crew of the Hafnia Nile and the 40 on the Ceres I were all accounted for, the MPA said, which was alerted to the fire at 6:15 a.m. (2215 GMT)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The owner of Hafnia Nile confirmed the vessel was involved in a collision with Chinese owned Ceres I.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Photographs released by the Singapore Navy showed thick black smoke billowing from one tanker and crew being rescued from life rafts and flown to hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"753\" height=\"565\" src=\"https:\/\/www.landingliker.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/IMG_8036.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1363\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.landingliker.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/IMG_8036.webp 753w, https:\/\/www.landingliker.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/IMG_8036-300x225.webp 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 753px) 100vw, 753px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The environmental authorities in neighbouring Malaysia said they had been told to prepare for potential&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/science\/environment\/clean-oil-spills-hasnt-changed-decades-scientists-want-change-rcna2649\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">oil spills<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Norway\u2019s Gard, one of Hafnia Nile\u2019s insurers, told Reuters it was too early to assess the environmental impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are supporting our member as they are dealing with the incident,\u201d Gard said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Navigational traffic had not been affected, although the status of the vessels or any pollution was unknown at present, a spokesperson at the UN\u2019s International Maritime Organization (IMO) said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNo aerial surveillance has been conducted so far,\u201d the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSalvage and fire-fighting assets have been arranged by both vessel owners to support the fire-fighting efforts and subsequent towage of the vessels to safety.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The IMO spokesperson said a salvage team had been appointed and was en route to the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 74,000 deadweight-tons capacity panamax tanker Hafnia Nile was carrying about 300,000 barrels of naphtha, according to ship-tracking data from Kpler and LSEG.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ceres I is a very large crude carrier supertanker, which ship-tracking data last showed was carrying around 2 million barrels of Iranian crude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"512\" src=\"https:\/\/www.landingliker.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/IMG_8035.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1364\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.landingliker.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/IMG_8035.webp 1024w, https:\/\/www.landingliker.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/IMG_8035-300x150.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.landingliker.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/IMG_8035-768x384.webp 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ceres I has been a boat that has gone dark many times over the years,\u201d said Matt Stanley, head of market engagement EMEA &amp; APAC with Kpler, referring to when vessels switch off their AIS tracking transponders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stanley said the last AIS signal the vessel transmitted around March indicated it was carrying Iranian crude, which the U.S. has tried to curtail, including imposing sanctions on ports, vessels and refineries involved in the trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShe was at anchorage (on Friday). We can be fairly sure that she was carrying Iranian crude and was going to China,\u201d Stanley said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Shadow fleet risks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>S&amp;P Global said in an April report that China buys around 90% of Iran\u2019s crude exports, often at discounted prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ceres I has not moved since July 11, according to LSEG shipping data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The area Ceres I is anchored in is known to be used by so-called&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/world\/oil-tankers-stripped-flags-after-breaching-u-s-sanctions-secretly-n1238153\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dark fleet ships<\/a>&nbsp;for the transfer of Iranian oil in contravention of U.S. sanctions, said Michelle Wiese Bockmann, principal analyst at Lloyd\u2019s List Intelligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Ceres I has repeatedly been involved in transferring or shipping Iranian oil in breach of U.S. sanctions,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shipping sources have said the tanker was also involved in transporting Venezuelan oil, which is also under U.S. sanctions, to China in recent years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The China-based owner of the Ceres I could not immediately be reached for comment.
