Iran\u00a0temporarily shut\u00a0part of the key\u00a0Strait of Hormuz\u00a0as\u00a0tensions\u00a0with the US continue to mount.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tuesday\u2019s move is the first time the Middle Eastern waterway has been closed since the 1980s, and came as Iran\u2019s ayatollah issued fresh threats against the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the world\u2019s most strategically important routes, around 20 per cent of oil passes through the Strait of Hormuz between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

State media announced it would be partially shut for several hours due to \u201csecurity precautions\u201d as the Revolutionary Guard\u00a0carried out military drills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Experts have previously warned that closing the Strait could cause a hike in oil prices if fuel is unable to get through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

International law permits countries to exercise control of up to 13.8 miles (12 nautical miles) from their coastline. At its narrowest point, the passage comes under both Iranian and Omani control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The US and Iran held talks about a potential nuclear deal on Tuesday, with Tehran\u2019s foreign minister announcing \u201cguiding principals\u201d had been agreed, without going into specifics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vice president JD Vance told Fox News: \u201cIn some ways, it went well; they agreed to meet afterwards. But in other ways, it was very clear that the president has set some red lines that the Iranians are not yet willing to actually acknowledge and work through.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Around 20 per cent of the world’s oil passes through the waterway, which was closed for military drills<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite publicly committing to ongoing discussions on a deal, both sides have taken escalatory action in recent days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The US positioned the world\u2019s largest warship, the USS Gerald R Ford, in the Middle East to join an earlier\u00a0aircraft carrier, the USS Abraham Lincoln,\u00a0that had moved to the region last month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei responded by threatening to sink the carriers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe US president keeps saying, \u2018our military is the strongest military in the world\u2019; the world\u2019s most powerful military can sometimes receive such a slap that it can no longer stay on its feet,\u201d he said on Tuesday. \u201cThey constantly say, \u2018we have sent an\u00a0aircraft carrier\u00a0towards Iran\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOK, of course an aircraft carrier is a dangerous device, but more dangerous than the carrier is the weapon that can send it to the bottom of the sea.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier in the week, Iran carried out military drills in the Strait, with missiles launched inside Iran and along its coast striking targets in the waterway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exercises, which included test missiles, warships and helicopters, were displaying the \u201coperational readiness\u201d\u00a0of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps\u2019 (IRGC) and plans for reciprocal action in case of \u201cpotential security and military threats\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Wednesday, Iran and Russia announced joint navy drills in the Sea of Oman and the northern Indian Ocean would be carried out on Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCreating convergence and coordination in joint measures to counter activities threatening maritime security and safety (…) as well as combating maritime terrorism, are among the main goals of this joint exercise,\u201d Iranian navy commander Hassan Maghsoodloo said according to Fars News.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
