An Emirates Airline flight from India with 300 people on board crash landed at Dubai\u2019s main airport Wednesday, sending black smoke billowing into the air and halting all traffic at the Middle East\u2019s busiest airport. There were no fatalities and all the passengers were safely evacuated before the plane was engulfed in a fireball.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dubai-based Emirates said the accident happened around 12:45 p.m. local time as Flight EK521 was arriving from the southern Indian city of Thiruvananthapuram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It confirmed that \u201call passengers and crew are accounted for and safe,\u201d but gave no details of what went wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Boeing 777 was carrying 282 passengers and 18 crew members from 20 different countries, according to the airline. Those onboard included 226 Indians, 24 Britons, 11 Emiratis, and six each from the United States and Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Dubai government\u2019s official media office separately said that all passengers were \u201cevacuated safely and no injuries have been reported so far.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It said authorities were \u201cdealing with the incident at the moment to ensure safety of all\u201d and that all departures from the airport had been halted until further notice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emirates predicted there would be an eight-hour delay in operations across its network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur main priority at this time is the safety and wellbeing of all involved and full co-operation is being extended to the authorities and emergency services managing the situation,\u201d the carrier said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Video posted online showed black smoke billowing from what looked like an Emirates jetliner lying on its belly on the runway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Firefighters soon managed to bring the fire under control, with Associated Press journalists at the airport reporting that the charred fuselage of the plane appeared to no longer be burning. The top of the aircraft was scorched brown from near the cockpit back to its tail. Several yellow fire trucks surrounded the plane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Dubai International Airport\u2019s Terminal 3, the home of Emirates, the typically bustling arrivals hall was hushed. Flat-screen televisions showed all incoming Emirates delayed or rescheduled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dubai resident Girisankal Gangadhakan said his wife called him after the plane landed to tell him that she and their three children onboard had been involved in an accident but were safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI was shocked when I heard about that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Boeing 777 departed Thiruvananthapuram at 10:19 a.m. and was scheduled to land at 12:50 p.m. local time, according to Emirates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thiruvananthapuram is the capital of the southwestern Indian state of Kerala. Many blue-collar migrant workers employed in the United Arab Emirates and other Gulf nations come from Kerala, which is a popular beachside tourist destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

T.P. Seetharam, India\u2019s ambassador to the UAE, said Indian diplomats had been dispatched to the airport and had met directly with many passengers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMany of them are in shock after such an event, and there may be minor bruises,\u201d he said in a telephone interview from Abu Dhabi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said that only one person \u2013 a crew member \u2013 had been taken to the hospital for treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Officials from the airline and Dubai International Airport declined to immediately provide further details when reached by phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dubai International is by far the Mideast\u2019s busiest airport, and is the world\u2019s busiest air hub in terms of international passenger traffic. It handled some 78 million passengers last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fast-growing Emirates is the region\u2019s biggest carrier. The government-backed airline has a good safety record, with no other major accidents recorded since its founding in 1985.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It operates the world\u2019s largest airline fleets of the wide-body 777 and Airbus A380 long-haul aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Guardian reports that the Boeing 777 is considered one of the safest planes around. More than 1,000 have been produced and there have only been a few dozen incidents logged, most of them minor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first fatal crash in the plane\u2019s 21-year history came in July 2013, when an Asiana Airlines jet landed short of the runway in San Francisco. Three of the 307 people on board died, one of whom was hit by an emergency truck after surviving the crash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
