An organization that honors fallen U.S. service members from Massachusetts and their families held a memorial service for the Lawrence native who was killed during Thursday’s bombing in Kabul, Afghanistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Veterans and their families gathered at the\u00a0Massachusetts Fallen Heroes Memorial\u00a0in Boston’s Seaport District on Saturday to honor fallen\u00a0U.S. Marine Corps\u00a0Sgt. Johanny Rosario Pichardo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A wreath was laid in Rosario’s honor and 13 roses were presented at the memorial to honor the 25-year-old and the other 12 U.S. service members who died in the attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We’re seeing vets and\u00a0Gold Star families\u00a0coming together to be supportive, and that’s all we can really do right now is use our experience and use our network and connections to get through this,” said Dan Magoon, a U.S. Army combat veteran and executive director of Massachusetts Fallen Heroes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I’m so sorry for the loss of their loved one,” Kelsey Powers, whose brother died in combat in 2008, said of the victims’ families. “Thirteen. Thirteen in one day (and) 170 (Afghans) in a day. That’s humans, lives, babies, children \u2013 it’s just sad.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I’m calling it a mistake of an evacuation plan, which makes me very angry. Lives were lost. My veteran community is grieving,” said Mary Ann Callahan, a Gold Star parent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Rosario’s hometown of Lawrence,\u00a0Mayor Kendrys Vasquez\u00a0honored the 2014\u00a0Lawrence High School\u00a0graduate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I have been in touch with the family to extend our most sincere condolences from myself, my family, as well as on behalf of all residents of the city of Lawrence,” Vasquez said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0White House\u00a0confirmed that the remains of Rosario and the other 12 service members killed in Kabul are being transported back to the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
