Body cam released showing Holly Hill officer killing man charging with knife

A man is dead following an officer-involved shooting after he called 911 and stated his intent to “stab and kill someone” on Wednesday, according to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office (VCSO), the suspect, Michael Anthony Edminson called 911 stating he was hearing voices that were telling him to kill people. The dispatcher asked Edminson, 40, if he had any weapons in his hand to which he responded that he had a steak knife in his hand.

“Steak knife? Can you put that away?” the 911 dispatcher asked.

“No, I don’t want to. I’m going to kill you with it,” Edminson told the dispatcher.

The sheriff’s office released a second 911 call of Edminson’s mother calling the police to warn officers that he has schizophrenia and that “he’s very violent when he get this way.”

“You can’t trust him, I’d put him in handcuffs as soon as I’d seen him,”Edminson’s mother warned.

The mother’s 911 call continues that he’s only been out of jail a week since he attacked the last policeman. The mother told the 911 dispatcher that he didn’t want his mother to come over because he has tried to kill her before.

“So, I said, ‘well then you got to hang up and call 911.’ And, then I thought ‘that was a stupid thing, I got to warn 911,'” the mother said to the dispatcher.

Before police arrived at the scene, Edminson told the dispatcher he wanted to go outside and kill a woman he saw. Despite the dispatchers plea that Edminson stay inside, someone could be heard screaming in the background shortly afterwards.

The footage released by VCSO soon cuts to the bodycam. It shows officers from the Holly Hill Police Department responded to the scene and gave commands for Edminson to drop the knife.

However, Edminson refused commands and charged towards the officer, deputies say. The officer backed away and gave more commands for Edminson to drop his knife, but he ignored them. That’s when the officer fired his weapon multiple times, causing Edminson to fall to the ground.

Deputies say he maintained control of the knife, stood back up and began to approach the police officer again. More shots were causing Edminson to fall to the ground again.

Multiple officers could be seen offering first aid. However, Edminson was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the officer-involved shooting, deputies said.
