Surveillance video captured the shocking moment a man attempted to kidnap a young child at a supermarket in Northern Italy on Saturday, Feb. 14.
The man was seen on the video violently snatching the 1-year-old girl as she was walking out of Esselunga mall in Bergamo with her mother, who tried to hang onto the child to prevent her from being taken.
Bystanders quickly rushed in to help, leading to a scuffle in the store.
Responding officers quickly arrived and arrested the man, according to Italian State Police.
“Subsequent investigations, including the collection of witness statements and analysis of video surveillance footage, allowed the judicial authorities to charge him with attempted aggravated kidnapping and aggravated assault,” they said.
The girl was taken to the hospital, where she was found to have suffered a fractured femur as a result of the incident, according to a police statement.
